A reviewable calculation
Many quick charts use only the printed birth year. This calculator also checks the solar-term boundary and shows every step used to reach the final Life Gua.
The birth date is compared with Li Chun, the Start of Spring solar term. Dates before that boundary use the preceding year for this calculation.
The last two year digits are reduced, then the calculator applies the documented pre-2000 or 2000-and-later formula for the selected traditional category.
The final number resolves to a trigram, element, East or West group, and four favorable plus four challenging Ba Zhai directions.
Worked example
For a date after Li Chun in 1978, the effective year remains 1978. The last two digits are 78: 7 + 8 = 15, then 1 + 5 = 6.
The pre-2000 male formula is 10 − 6 = 4. The resulting Life Gua is 4, Xun 巽, associated with Wood and the East Group in this Ba Zhai mapping.
